A philistine in the art film business, Jeremy Prokosch is a producer unhappy with the work of his director. Prokosch has hired Fritz Lang to direct an adaptation of "The Odyssey," but when it seems that the legendary filmmaker is making a picture destined to bomb at the box office, he brings in a screenwriter to energize the script. The professional intersects with the personal when a rift develops between the writer and his wife.
Director Fritz Lang is making a film about the Greek hero Odysseus for producer Jeremy Prokosh. Paul Javal, a young writer, is hired to rewrite the script. After an initial meeting, Prokosh invites Javal and his wife Camille to his villa. Prokosh is very interested in Camille and leaves no stone unturned to drive her home. Her husband Paul does not object, on the contrary: he insists that Camille accept Prokosh's offer. Camille is convinced that Paul only has his career in mind and therefore wants to set her up with Prokosh. She writes a letter to Paul in which she clearly states her contempt for his actions. But a discussion is never to take place.
