After the death of their parents, the twins Grace and Gilbert are placed in different foster families. While Gilbert is exposed to the cruelties of a fanatically religious family on the other side of Australia, Grace withdraws more and more into herself - just like her beloved snails. It is only through her friendship with Pinky, an eccentric older lady full of joy, that she regains hope and realizes how beautiful life can be despite all its difficulties.
