Agnes, once an outstanding student and now a junior professor at her university in Massachusetts, leads a secluded life in rural New England. She and her neighbour have grown closer, but she only feels understood by her best friend Lydie, who lives in New York. Agnes has been struggling for years with the traumatic consequences of an assault by her former academic mentor. In five chapters, the film accompanies Agnes through three decisive years of her life.
