The great thinker Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz is to be portrayed on behalf of Electress Sophie of Hanover. However, the scholar is not at all in the mood for this. During the sittings for the painting, a passionate battle erupts between the philosopher and the young painter Aaltje Van De Meer over truth in image and representation, reality and art.
